Around the World to China

Ronceverte Elementary students are learning about other countries and cultures in our Around the World program. Created by our ESL teacher, Jessica Morgan, the program encourages each classroom to study a country of their choosing and create a presentation for our school-wide celebration in May where all students will travel "around the world".

Mrs. Wolfe's first grade class chose China and enjoyed a visit from Dr. Roger Weikle who spent a great deal of time in this country during his tenure as Dean of the College of Business Administration at Winthrop University in South Carolina. Dr. Weikle discussed the language, currency, food, culture, diverse landscape of the country, and pointed out the similarities between the United States and China. He also took the students on a journey to the Great Wall of China and the Forbidden City.

Dr. Weikle also taught them about the tomb of the Qin emperor, Shihuangdi, where they explored one of the most significant archeological finds in history - the Terracotta Army. This collection of thousands of life-size clay models depicting soldiers, horses, and chariots was meant to protect the emperor in the afterlife was buried with the emperor over 2,000 years ago. Students truly enjoyed their trip "Around the World" to visit the country of China!
