Autism Awareness Day

Ronceverte Elementary observed the 18th annual World Autism Awareness Day today, April 2, by wearing blue throughout the school. In particular, Mrs. Kirby's and Mrs. Ashley's Pre-K class turned out in all the many different shades of blue. This tradition likely stems from the 'Light It up Blue" campaign, a global initiative tied to both Autism Awareness Day and Autism Awareness Month, which runs throughout April.

During this time, many building landmarks, such as concert halls, universities, and stadiums are illuminated in blue lights in recognition of autism awareness. However, autism awareness is also represented by other symbols such as interlocking, puzzle pieces in colorful rainbow colors, the Infinity symbol, and clasped hands.

The rainbow symbolizes diversity in personalities, abilities, and challenges faced by autistic people. In 1999, the Infinity symbol reinforced the theme of inclusivity as it relates to autism awareness. Finally, the use of clasped hands indicates acceptance and support. When the hands depict contrasting colors, the image signifies the importance of "embracing differences."
